Who we are

The main objective of the COMESA Monetary Institute is to carry out work

necessary for enhancing cooperation and monetary and financial matters with the aim of the establishment of a monetary union, the creation of a common central bank and the introduction of a common currency in COMESA.

The CMI’s objective is to undertake all the technical, policy, statistical, institutional and legal preparatory work that will lead to creation of the common central bank and the introduction of a common currency in COMESA region, with the ultimate objective of achieving a monetary union.
